Rainbow & Cloud St. Patrick’s Day Garland
Not everyone decorates their house for St. Patrick’s Day, but it’s sure fun to celebrate! Before kids I celebrated my Irish side a lot more than I do now! Sadly, I cannot hang like I used to. Most of the hanging I do nowadays has to do with garlands and picture frames. Every once in a while, I’ll let my Irish heritage get the best of me, but then I’m sick for three days. 😉
This year I started the celebration early with this adorable rainbow and cloud St. Patrick’s Day garland! I’m kind of in love with this little garland. Like most of my projects, this was easy to make, and obviously didn’t cost a lot of money since it’s made of felt.
I used some felt clouds that I already had from the “Cloud Garland” I made for my daughter’s “Sky High Birthday Party.” They are pretty straight forward to make, but if you don’t want to put in the extra time to make them, you could also cut out clouds from some white felt (without stuffing them).
I used felt, glue, and baker’s twine to put together my St. Patrick’s Day garland. The rainbow colors are a little less traditional, but they are just so pretty! It’s such a sweet touch to add to a space for St. Patrick’s Day. If you are looking for some St. Patty’s Day decor that doesn’t involve your typical shamrock, this is the perfect decoration!
Details to DIY the Rainbow & Cloud St. Patrick’s Day Garland:
Materials Needed:
- Felt Clouds (I already made felt clouds for my daughter’s “Sky High Birthday Party.”)
- Felt squares (I chose less traditional rainbow colors from JoAnns.)
- Fabric scissors & paper scissors
- Paper
- Pencil
- Baker’s twine
- Large sewing needle
- Glue gun and glue sticks (or fabric glue)
Step 1:
Draw your rainbow arch that you will use as a stencil. Fold the paper in half, and draw one side of the arch. This will ensure that your rainbow arch is symmetrical. Start with the largest arch.
Step 2:
From there, measure how thick you’d like each arch to be. I eyeballed my measurements. No need to get the ruler out, unless you are that kind of person. 😉 Then cut out each rainbow arch.
Step 3:
Cut out your arches. I placed my arch onto the felt and cut around it. You can certainly trace your arch stencil using a sharpie marker or fabric pen.
Step 4:
Once you have cut out each arch, glue the colored felt pieces on top of each other to create your rainbow for your St. Patrick’s Day garland! I ran out of fabric glue, so I finished gluing my arches with a glue gun. I actually preferred the glue gun, because it dried so quickly.
Step 5:
Glue the clouds on top of the rainbow.
Step 6:
With your sewing needle, thread the baker’s twine through the needle and tie a loop at the end of one side. Next, pull your needle through each cloud and rainbow depending on where you want the baker’s twine placed. I knew that I was going to be hanging my St. Patrick’s Day garland against a wall, so I was able to thread the baker’s twine through the clouds on the rainbows. If the garland was going to be hanging in the air, on a mantle for example, I would have to thread the baker’s twine through the top of the rainbows so that they were not top heavy.
Step 7:
When you are finished threading your St. Patrick’s Day garland, tie another loop at the other end of the twine. Now go hang it up to bring some cheer to your space!
