Gold Curtain Rods & Acrylic Drawer Pulls
We are officially half way through the One Room Challenge! Today marks week 3 of the challenge and You can see the rooms beginning to take shape! Make sure you check out the other guest participants if you haven’t already to see some amazing room transformations taking place!
This past week, was about windows and hardware in my space. My gold curtain rod arrived a little later than expected, so I had to switch painting my dressers with hanging the gold curtain rods and installing the gold and acrylic drawer pulls! I’m actually pretty happy that I had to switch them, because although painting the dressers was easy (find out how HERE), it was more time consuming than putting up the drapery rods and putting on the pulls! I like to get the big tasks over with first!
Scroll down to see how I’m doing on my $500 budget!
An Affordable Gold Curtain Rod
I hope that everyone knows to hang their rods as high as possible! Unfortunately, ten years ago, I did not. I originally hung the first rod over the window just above the window casing. Then when I hung the rod above the door, I had to hang it higher, because the door trim was higher than the window trim! That made the rods different heights! That killed me for years!
I knew that I wanted gold hardware in the room from the beginning. I thought it would pop nicely against the white walls and gray dressers.
In my search, I found several options for my gold curtain rod, but some were out of my $500 budget or just weren’t my style. I wanted something simple with clean modern lines. The finials needed to be subtle and not protrude too far. I found a few that I thought I’d share because they are affordable and fit my criteria! Just click on the images to see more!
The Gold Curtain Rod
Below is the gold curtain rod that I went with! I LOVE it! The finial is exactly what I was looking for and the price was great! I even got to use a coupon because they are from Bed, Bath, & Beyond! If I could afford custom, I would get those, but I don’t want to put the money into them for many reasons. These rods are a decent thickness at one inch. The trick to making a non-custom rod look more custom is too get ones that are at least one inch thick, preferably even thicker.
Before
After
If you remember from previous posts, there is a door behind my bed, so in order to hide the door, I decided to hang a drapery rod there. So that the light did not shine through, I had to use some left over blackout lining from my son’s room to cover the door. I just hammered some tacks to the door and one panel covered perfectly. There was an additional cost that I did not expect, because I had to purchase four drapery panels instead of two. Grrrr.
I was supposed to purchase one rod to save money and then spray paint the old rod gold, because you can’t really see the rod behind the bed. However, I decided that although I want to save money and stick to my $500 budget, I would regret not having two matching rods. And I love the rods, so I want them to be seen, not hidden! I pulled the rod out further behind the bed so that you can see more of it than on the previous rod.
Window Treatments
If you look back at my inspiration pictures from Week 1, you’ll see one picture that has bamboo blinds and gray linen style drapes. Ikea had exactly what I was looking for in drapes at an amazing price! They run $24.99 per pair.
After
The HANNALILL drapes are the perfect shade of light gray. They are a light fabric and not lined, so they let the light in. If you want the room dark, these drapes are not for you! I had heavy room darkening drapes before and I needed a break. No one needs room darkening drapes with kids anyway!
They come with a rod pocket, tabs, or slits for drapery hooks! The tabs allow the drapes to lay very nicely and have a custom look. In order to get an even more custom look, you can add THESE drapery hooks from Ikea seen below and pair them with some drapery rings like THESE or THESE seen below. Since I’m trying to update my master bedroom for $500, drapery rings are out of the budget right now. I’ll keep them in mind for a little update in the future!
Acrylic Drawer Pulls
My old dresser had generic knobs that were actually breaking off! I’ve never seen that happen before, and it was just another reason why I needed new drawer knobs!
I was looking for gold and acrylic knobs. I really should say that I wanted brass and acrylic knobs, not gold. Brass looks a little more worn than a shiny new gold, and that is why I wanted brass. Here are the knobs I was deciding between for the dressers. Click on the image to see more!
I can’t give it all away yet, so I’ll give you a sneak peek of the dressers with the knobs that I chose! I tried them all out and decided right away that the Etsy ones were too shiny. I thought I was going to go with the glass knobs (middle), but after living with them for a few days, I decided that I liked the larger ones the best (top). They were more subtle, and I liked how they complimented the room. I’m going for a simple look with a coastal flare. The glass knobs made the dresser look too glam in my opinion.
Let me remind you what the dresser used to look like. I should probably be embarrassed about this picture, but it can only get better from there, right!?

The Plan
Here is the plan for this coming week! I have to decide on nightstands! I have my old ones that I was planning to paint white, but I’ve been itching to get out and look at some second hand stores! I made one stop a the Restore near us and found an interesting cabinet for $20, but I’m not sure it’s the right look.
Week 3:
- Decide on nightstands or paint mine white
- Add THESE gold and mother of pearl knobs to my nightstands if I keep them
- Decide on desk and put it together- (I’m thinking about THIS one and THIS one.) My parents also have a fold up desk at their beach house that they said I could use. It’s too big for the space where I had originally planned to put my desk, so I would have to put it where the nightstand goes. That would mean that the nightstands wouldn’t match, which doesn’t bother me, but I’d need a taller nightstand on the other side, because my current nightstand is very low compared to the fold up desk!
Cost to Date
If you remember, I’m trying to update my master bedroom while only spending $500! So far I have spent $32.
Do you think I can do it!?
This week I spent more than I had planned to spend. That means that I might have to remove something else or get a little crafty for the rest of the budget!
