Ikea Spice Rack Hack for Your Linen Closet
If you have been following along, you know that our house is only 1,800 square feet, so we are constantly on the look out for new ways to store and organize our “stuff!” I’m currently on a mission to declutter and organize our home in my “Hot-Mess House Challenge!” You can read more about it HERE! The first space I completed in the challenge was my small linen closet. It was a great place to start considering that it was a smaller project and easy to complete.
I knew that I needed to maximize my storage options in my closet. I had taken care of the storage bins and boxes, for the items we didn’t use everyday. However, I needed something for my everyday things, and I needed easy access to them. There’s no way my husband was going to go fishing into a storage bin for his deodorant! Then we would be right back where we started with a scary looking linen closet! For a more detailed post on “How to Organize a Small Linen Closet” click HERE!
Ikea hacks are all over the place, so when I was trying to find an attractive way to hold and display my everyday toiletries and medicines in my linen closet, it’s not surprising that I thought about the Ikea Bekvam spice rack as a storage system! I would just make my own Ikea spice rack hack! I had scoured the internet and Pinterest, but I didn’t like anything that I saw. My house was built at the turn of the century, so using wood and keeping it minimal seemed like the best idea to me! I’m so glad that I chose to create a medicine cabinet from an Ikea spice rack hack!
Details to DIY the Ikea Spice Rack Hack:
Materials Needed:
Step 1:
Measure the location you would like to mount your spice racks. I used five spice racks because I had five flat areas that surrounded the panels in my door. Make sure that the screws are long enough to penetrate the wood a fair amount, but short enough that they won’t go through the other side! I hung mine on the thicker part of the door.
Step 2:
Find the center of your door and mark it. Find the center of your spice rack and mark that. Match up the center marks so that you can mark the holes for the screws. You can always “eyeball” things, but I recommend using a small level to make sure that your spice racks are level.
Step 3:
Drill pilot holes using one of your smallest drill bits. This will make it easier to push your screws into the wood.
Step 4:
Screw one screw into the rack and door. Before putting in the other screw, make sure that the rack is level.
Step 5:
Paint the shelves! I painted them the same color as the door, Benjamin Moore Chantilly Lace. I wanted mine to blend into the door. You could always have some fun and paint them in bright colors!

I might have been able to get even more storage on the back of my door if I had gone with one of those metal storage units, but I’m trying to keep the character in my home, so the painted wooden Ikea spice racks were perfect! If you have a small home or an old home with limited closet space, these are a fantastic option for optimizing your storage!
