6 Simple Steps to Creating a Spring Tablescape
Spring is supposedly on it’s way, and everyone is looking forward to warmer weather and green returning to outdoors! I love springtime because it’s a great time to refresh your home. It’s also a great time to reset your dining room table for a new season and for Easter if you celebrate it!
Step 1: Pick a Theme
Whatever you do, don’t panic! This does not have to be like the Mickey Mouse meets Paw Patrol theme that you pulled together for your child’s first birthday party!

Picking a theme for creating a spring tablescape could be something as simple as deciding if you want to keep things traditional or modern, colorful or neutral, minimal or maximum, etc. For example, I wanted a relaxed yet classic vibe to my table. I wanted to create a table that mixed warm and cool colors and soft and hard textures. Most importantly, I wanted to be able to use what I had!
Step 2: Neutral Base
Start with a neutral layer! This is your base, that’s why I prefer it to be neutral. If you like more color, go wild. This layer might be a tablecloth or a table runner or both. I like to use both!

Layering your table creates a finished look. It’s like having all of the right accessories to an outfit! Don’t get me wrong. There are some extremely beautiful minimalistic tablescapes. However, I’m giving you all of the pieces to the puzzle. If you prefer something a little more simple, all you have to do is not included that step!

Step 3: Chargers
A Charger is a decorative base on which dinnerware can be placed. They come in all different shapes, sizes, and textures. Once again, this layer can help define the theme you are going for and add some additional depth to your table.

I chose wooden chargers because I like the natural wood texture along with the light and freshness seen during spring. I have seen chargers that were made of moss, seagrass, cloth and more! You can even get creative and make your own chargers like I did in my “Easter Kids’ Table!”

Step 4: Dinnerware
This may come as a surprise, but I like to keep my dinnerware white, to serve as neutral background just like my neutral base! It allows everything else to stand out, and that’s what I like! If you prefer something with some more color, go for it!

I’m including my little DIY scalloped clay egg cup in this section, because it’s sitting on top of the dinnerware. It was super easy to make. All I did was roll out THIS air dry clay, cut it out with a scalloped edge cookie cutter, and mold it around an egg! I always like to add something to the top of the dinnerware. Often, I try to add something that pertains to the season. In my post “How to Create a Classic & Inexpensive Christmas Tablescape,” I used golden pears that I spray painted, and in my “Halloween Home Tour 2018,” I used small white skulls!

Step 5: Napkins, Flatware, & Glasses
These items are like the necessary accessories to an outfit! You have to have them in order for your table to look complete! There are so many ways to add your flatware and napkins to the place setting. Unless you are serving dinner for the queen, pretty much anything goes these days…so get creative!

To save money, I tried to use what I have. That meant that I only had four white napkins and six place settings. That was not a problem though, because like my dining room chairs, the napkins on the ends became “statement napkins!” They are a different pattern, but flow because they have the same colors.
I used my “DIY wooden bead and tassel napkin rings” from the Philly Home Show to create a spring tablescape. They are so easy to make, and you can add different beads or tassels depending on the style you are going for! Be sure to check out the napkin rings for an easy project!
The gold flatware I use is a little secret of mine. Actually it’s not so secret, because I tell everyone who I can! I use gold PLASTIC utensils to create a posh table setting vibe! It makes for easy clean up and is really cost effective. If you entertain a lot, you might want to invest in a real gold set!

Step 6: Centerpiece
The possibilities are endless when you create a spring tablescape! However, there are some easy rules to live by that can help you narrow down your centerpiece. To keep it easy, always go by the odd number rule of thumb. This means that visually, groupings of odd numbers appear the best. This could be a grouping of three items, five items, or one! Don’t get too hung up on this rule though. If you have a grouping of four and you love it, go for it. Rules were meant to be broken.

You are creating a spring tablescape, so it’s best to use items that evoke a fresh and rejuvenating feeling. In other words, use items that you see in spring! Light colors and natural textures are perfect to add to your table for spring. Think pastel colors and greenery! I used two metal lanterns that I found at Home Goods and added the faux potted paper whites from Pottery Barn. There are so many fantastic faux florals out there right now, and they make an easy and beautiful centerpiece!
If you look at setting a table as individual steps, there is not that much involved in creating a spring tablescape! By breaking the table setting into manageable steps, it makes such a difference toward tackling the whole thing and having it look completed!
